My Personal Projects HighlyStructured.com Blog Project Started in December of 2005, the blog project was meant as an experiment to see the effect of blog posts would have on the search engine rankings of this website. The main project was actually a precursor to the KeepMyGolfScore.com 19th Hole Golf Blog basically to see if it was even worth investing in the time and effort needed to maintain a blog for the golf site. KeepMyGolfScore.com
KeepMyGolfScore.com is an online golf score tracker that allows golfers to enter and manage their golf scores/stats and keep their handicap. The site was first started as a pay-for service in 2001 and has since been redesigned and redeveloped as a free service to its users. The site is kept alive through various ad programs including Google AdSense ads, CommissionJunction.com affiliate ads, and Tribal Fusion CPM ads. Based on the success of the blog run on this site, the 19th Hole Golf Blog was set up to increase traffic to the website. The project has been an outstanding success and new articles and golf tips are added weekly. BankInfoSecurity.com
BankInfoSecurity.com is a vertical portal website dedicated to educating the information security community specifically focusing on banking and finance. I started with BankInfoSecurity.com in October of 2005 and was brought on board to help with the online marketing. Since then I have redesigned and redeveloped the CMS controlling all the content on the site and have dramatically increased the traffic and rank of the site. When I started the site had an Alexa ranking of over 800,000 and as of writing this, the site is now consistently ranking in the high 40,000's to low 50,000's with ocassional spikes in the 20,000 range. Registration for the site and all content is free, and is supported by corporate sponsors. JamesFiorentino.com
JamesFiorentino.com is the portfolio website of James Fiorentino, a good friend of mine. His website was in fact the third website I ever created from scratch, in NotePad, in about 1997. Since then the site has gone through several major revisions and has also just recently been redesigned and redeveloped. The site used to be comprised of all static HTML pages. However, due to the shear volume of work in James' portfolio and the tediousness of updating the site every time a new piece was added, I converted the entire site to run on a custom-built CMS using PHP as the scripting language. |

Marketing Monger Quest for 1000 Podcasts
The Marketing Monger website has become a great resource of marketing inspriation for me. Eric Mattson runs the site and has set up some incredible interviews with some very influential marketers in a variety of disciplines. The deal is that Eric plans on interviewing 1000 people thus creating a massive archive of marketing inspiration. I cannot say that every online marketing activity I've engaged in over the past few months is directly related to his interviews, although the ideas from the people he interviews do have quite an impact on my thinking. The interviews themselves are not really interviews as they are more stream of consciousness by the person being interviewed rather than a typical Q&A interview, but the content is fantastic and highly recommended. SEOMoz.org
The reason why I have SEOMoz.org listed here is that I can sense a connection with one of the owners of the site, Rand Fishkin. I get the sense we are about the same age, and in the same market, although he has basically gone out on his own and started an online marketing consulting agency, while I practice online marketing for one specific company. I mostly get the RSS feed blog updates which have some great commentary on the search engines and online marketing in general. I also feel drawn to the site because I kind of despise the air of authority some of the editors exude. |
